Key takeaways from the HEY Charity podcast Episode 2
Gerry Morrison and Harriet Wheeldon from Rollits and Sophie Bartup from the HEY Smile Foundation are the co-hosts of the HEY Charity Podcast
The HEY Charity Podcast is a six-part series for anyone involved with charities but brings charity law to life with practical insights from the people who have lived and breathed charities in the Hull and East Yorkshire area.
In Episode 2 of the HEY Charity Podcast, co-hosts Gerry Morrison, Harriet Wheeldon and Sophie Bartup (HEY Smile Foundation) explore the world of charity fundraising.
Fundraising and the law
Fundraising is not one of the recognised charitable aims and a charity cannot be set up to solely fundraise. To be charitable at law, a charity must be set up for one of the 13 charitable purposes.
Charities are able to be innovative with their fundraising strategies which can range from holding fundraising events, collections, or trading activities. Where appropriate, charities can set up trading subsidiaries and tax efficiently gift surplus generated to the charity and it is important to remember that that arrangements between a charity and its subsidiary are kept on an arm’s length basis.
In this episode, Gerry and Harriet discuss fundraising strategies such as commercial participation, appeals and the requirements when a professional fundraiser is engaged.
Guest speaker - Andy Haynes
Gerry, Harriet and Sophie were thrilled to be joined by Age UK CEO Andy Haynes, who shared his invaluable insights and experience in fundraising for charities.
Andy’s career in charity work began when he volunteered on Christmas Day to help the homeless after an invitation from his local college. Having experienced many methods of fundraising, it is the most eye-catching and different campaigns that catch the attention of donors Andy reiterates. Fundraising in ways different to others not only generates monetary income but is valuable for creating connections and a lasting legacy.
