Clair Douglas is a second year trainee at Rollits in York.
Clair's current seat is in Property.
Below, Clair gives us her account of what it's like to be a trainee at Rollits, along with her description of a typical day in the life at work! |
For the third seat of my training contract I will be based in the firm's Property Department at York. Having worked in the York office as a Paralegal prior to starting the training contract I was really looking forward to coming back.
Rollits provides Trainees with a high standard of legal training and, in line with this, Trainees are given a slighter greater degree of autonomy and responsibility than you might otherwise expect.
As this is the third seat of my contract I now have several files for which I am responsible on a day to day basis under the guidance of my supervising solicitor. Daily contact with your supervising solicitor and the firm's open door policy ensures that, should you require assistance, someone is always available to discuss a matter or point you in the right direction.
On a typical day I will start work at around 8.45am and tend not to leave until after 6pm. I must stress that the firm does not insist that anyone works past 5pm and they are keen to promote a healthy work life balance.
The firm's property department deals with a wide range of interesting work and therefore you have the opportunity to gain a great deal of experience during your 6 month seat. Although only a few weeks in, I have already been involved in the first registration of a large number of properties for a housing association client together with drafting a complex option agreement with overage provisions for a private client.
A large proportion of any trainee's time will be taken up with legal research but the firm is also very keen to ensure you have the opportunity to develop all other required skills. My supervising solicitor monitors that I have a range of work which will include drafting documents, handling my own case load and meeting with clients where possible.
