A Day in the Life of a Trainee

Dawn Rusling Dawn is a first year trainee at Rollits in Hull.

Her current seat is in the Private Capital Department.

Below, she gives us an account of what it's like to be a trainee at Rollits, along with her description of a typical day at work!

Since I have joined Rollits I have been made to feel extremely welcome by everyone in the firm. I also felt part of the team before joining, as I was invited along with the other new trainees in the months leading up to my start date to various events in order to meet everyone in less formal surroundings. This really helped to make my first day a lot less daunting, and allowed us to chat to our future colleagues in the relaxed environment of a BBQ and a ball.

My usual day will start at around 8.30am when I will check my emails and see what work I will be dealing with on that day. I usually have a list of jobs to be done, which constantly need prioritising in response to further work which you are asked to do. Having said that, the workload so far has never got too heavy, and everyone is very willing to lend a hand should you get into difficulty. I have always been made to feel welcome in asking for advice on any issue, no matter how small. The location of the office means it's very handy to pop out in your lunch hour to the shops or to have a wander about, and I usually leave the office at about 5.30pm, depending on the tasks I have left to finish.

My first seat at Rollits is in the Private Capital department. I have been pleasantly surprised by the diversity of work I am involved with, which ranges from trust and probate matters to charity issues. The seat is not just about wills and trusts, but encompasses a broad range of other areas of law, such as property and company. I have recently worked on a charity merger, which involves very similar processes and due diligence as a normal company merger. The Private Capital department in Hull is a small team in comparison to other departments, but I believe that this has allowed me more of an insight into what goes on, as you are constantly in the middle of everything!

Another highlight of the Private Capital seat is the amount of client contact you are given. There are meetings nearly every day which I sit in on and take notes. I then produce a file note of the meeting, and press on with any work leading from it. It's good to be able to put a face to the name of the client you're dealing with and speaking to on the phone, and it's also a great way of building up your contacts for the future.

Rollits really does promote a healthy work life balance, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my first month working here!
