Work Experience

Please note that the deadline to apply for our summer Work Experience Scheme is 31 March 2024.

We run a series of very successful and popular two week vacation placements in June and July each year in our Hull office.

Unlike some firms, we do not believe that work experience should involve photocopying or making tea! You will work on real client matters alongside our trainees, solicitors and lawyers by getting involved in drafting documents, conducting research, meeting clients and going to court.

Our programme is organised to allow you to spend time in each of the firm's core departments to experience the sort of work we do. We structure our placements like a mini training contract, and a detailed timetable will be issued to you at the start of your placement.

You will participate in group exercises and attend a range of informal presentations to learn how Rollits operates as a business. At the end of the fortnight you will be required to make a presentation to members of the firm and your work experience colleagues. And we don't forget about the social side of things so you will be given the opportunity to meet our lawyers and trainees outside of work in a social setting.

A work experience placement at Rollits is an excellent opportunity to gain a true insight into our firm, its culture and its people. The programme we run is an important part of our recruitment process and as such we aim to ensure that your experience will be practical, informative and as true to life as a Trainee Solicitor as possible. The more you put into the placement the more you will get out of it; its purpose is as much for you to assess us as it is for us to assess you!

Who do we want?

You must be available for two weeks in the summer of 2024. At that time you should have completed the second year of a law degree, or the third year of an academic non-law degree, and be looking to start a training contract in September 2026.

You must have the equivalent of three grade Bs at A level, and, if you have not already done so, you must be on target to attain a 2:1 or above in your degree.

Above all we are looking for candidates with the right attitude. We expect our staff to be motivated and enthusiastic, and we look for these qualities in our work experience students.

  • I would recommend the work experience programme at Rollits to any law student or aspiring solicitor. This is a very unique opportunity and many other law firms do not offer placements like this. It provides aspiring solicitors with the opportunity to experience multiple departments, which helps students understand which department they would like to practice in. The work can be both challenging and rewarding, and provides students with the opportunity to showcase and develop a range of skills.

  • I have found this experience at Rollits extremely useful as you learn so much about the different departments and the tasks the trainees carry out ... and you have the chance to try out a lot of these tasks yourself.

    Holly Holderness - June 2023
  • Taking part in the Rollits ‘Work Experience’ has been a great way for me to not only confirm my decision to venture into the legal profession, but it has also been extremely helpful in deciding which kind of sector I think I would like to qualify into.

    Lauren Williamson - June 2023
  • I have had a great two-week experience at Rollits, everyone is very friendly and approachable and there are no silly questions. It has been great to experience a busy law firm and gain an insight into some of the work undertaken by moving round the different departments like a mini training contract, helping me to further my knowledge. We were given opportunities to get involved in current cases as partners and trainees set research tasks, helping me to further my knowledge. It has been great to meet everybody within the firm and get to know them and about their experiences and everyone is willing to help or answer any questions.

    Nathan Foster -July 2022
  • I really enjoyed my time at Rollits for the last two weeks. Everything was organised so that we could really experience the life of a trainee in Rollits. Everyone was approachable and I knew that I could ask questions and someone would be willing to help me. Moving between sectors gave me opportunities to further my knowledge of the inner workings of a law firm, it was a great insight of what work is required for different sectors, varying from drafting a Will to research tasks. It also helped me understand what I should do to receive a training contract. It was a great and enjoyable experience.

    Wiktoria Przybylska - July 2022
  • The two weeks experience at Rollits gave me an insight to how friendly and welcoming the firm are, everybody makes time for you to answer questions and help you with anything you are struggling with. It was interesting to sit in different departments and do different tasks to help further my knowledge in each field, I never felt lost for work and everyone was willing to give you work that may help them in their research. I came into Rollits unsure on what to do after my degree and now after enjoying my experience, I feel much more confident moving forwards in my education and career with a goal at the end.
